Worcester – The Worcester Common Oval Public Ice Skating Rink will open for the season on Saturday, December 9 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The Oval has piped-in music, skate rentals, concessions, holiday lights and more, making it a fun and affordable family-friendly activity. New this year is the WOOville Winter Wonderland, a series of wooden sheds set-up on the Worcester Common that will host pop-up shops every weekend throughout the skating season featuring local food and craft vendors. Kids can have their picture taken with Santa for free every Saturday and Sunday from noon to 2 p.m. until Christmas.

Ice skating will be available from Dec. 9 through January 21 on Thursdays and Fridays from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m.

The Oval will also be open for daytime skating during school vacation week in December, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and New Year’s Day. During the week of December 26, the Oval will be open from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m.Monday through Wednesday, and 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. The Oval will be closed on Christmas Day.

Admission for open skating is $10, and free for children six and younger. Bring your own skates and receive $5 off the admission price. A refundable $25 cash or credit card deposit is required for skate rentals. The Oval is available for private group rentals by calling (508) 929-0125.

There is plenty of affordable parking available within walking distance of the Worcester Common Oval, including the new underground Worcester Common Garage at 2 Eaton Place, Mercantile Center Parking Garage, Federal Plaza Parking Garage and the Pearl-Elm Parking Garage.

Skate & Screen

Get into the holiday spirit on Friday, December 22 with an outdoor film screening of family classic, The Muppet Christmas Carol at 5:30 p.m. on City Hall Plaza. Admission to the movie is free. Admission for skating is $10 and includes skate rentals. Receive a $5 discount if you bring your own skates. Children six and under skate free.

New Year’s Eve

Get ready to ring in the New Year at the City of Worcester’s New Year’s Eve Celebration at the Worcester Common Oval. Enjoy a family-friendly atmosphere with ice skating, fireworks, street performers, live music and a heated tent. The Worcester Common Oval Public Ice Skating Rink will be open for public skating from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. with the New Year’s Eve festivities being held from5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
